A Memorial That God Honors

Each year we honor those who died in service for our country—our nation’s young men and women who gave their lives on the battlefield so that you and I could enjoy living in the land that they died for. We honor and celebrate them each Memorial Day. They are a memorial to America’s continued existence as a nation.

But I want to tell you about a memorial that God honors. The greatest accomplishment was by Jesus Christ when He died on the cross to pay for our sins. Scripture says,

Therefore God has highly exalted Him, and has given Him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow...and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil 2:9-11)

Not only so, but every child of God who has gone before us is a memorial of faith that God honors. The writer of Hebrews lists such names as Noah, Abraham, Moses, and many others—some who received reward in this life, and some who died without earthly reward but would receive a better heavenly one. After listing these names that God has honored with eternal reward, the writer says,

Therefore since we also are surrounded with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily besets us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith…. (Hebrews 12:1-2a)

Come on! You can give your very soul to Christ! You can give your whole being to Him! That’s why He redeemed you—to have you become like Him, and to live in eternity with Him. Truly, your life too can be a memorial that God honors.
